Fifth Car Pack for Test Drive Unlimited Released

The fifth volume of downloadable car pack for Test Drive Unlimited has hit Xbox Live Marketplace, offering up six new vehicles for the game for 350 points. The pack contains five supercars and one motorbike, which are the Chrysler Crossfire SRT6 Coupe, Dodge Charger Super Bee, Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole, Ferrari 512 TR, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R and the Spyker C8 Spyder. Additionally, players can downloadable the Holden Efijy Concept completely free.

“Since launch last year, we’ve been 100% committed to regularly bringing brilliant new content to fans to enrich the Test Drive Unlimited experience and give new and existing fans great reasons to keep the pedal to the metal,” said Mathias Hautefort, Executive Vice President of publishing and production, Atari. “This is the fifth instalment of brand new vehicles for Test Drive Unlimited, and makes this already essential game even more of a must-have for any self-respecting racing fan.”

Test Drive Unlimited is available now for PC, PS2, PSP and Xbox 360, though only the Microsoft console offers the additional cars.

Test Drive Unlimited Gets Premium Content

New content for Test Drive Unlimited is available for download via Xbox Live Marketplace. Selling for 350 points, and dubbed PURE POWER 2 Download Set, the downloadable content features seven supercars, including a Ferrari 250 GTO and the 25th anniversary edition of the Lamborghini Countach. One of the seven vehicles - the Chevrolet Corvette C1 1957 Hardtop, will be available for free to all gamers.

Test Drive Unlimited Gets “Groundbreaking” Price

Breaking the pricing convention of triple-A Xbox 360 games, Atari today announced that Test Drive Unlimited will retail for $40 when released. “Innovation should be available to everyone, not a privilege for those who can afford high price tags,” said the financially ailing publisher’s CEO Bruno Bonnell.

In addition to the above, the company also laid out plans for post-release support, stating that they begin releasing “car packs” six weeks after launch on Xbox Live Marketplace. Test Drive Unlimited will ship with 90 vehicles, but players clamoring for more can download the packs which will feature six or more cars complete with genre-specific radio stations, with each featuring between 10-20 songs. These packs will be released monthly.

In a press release dated July 1, Atari announced the opening of the online polls for its “Want to be a Car Designer?” contest. The contest has all novice designers creating an image of their dream concept car, with the winner getting their designed car racing alongside exotics from Lamborghini, Ferrari and Aston Martin in Test Drive Unlimited; the winner will also receive $2,500 in cash.

The voting period has already begun, and will end on July 10. The entry with the greatest number of votes will win the contest.

Test Drive Unlimited is being developed for release this September on Xbox 360. Current-gen versions of the game are also in the works.

Test Drive Unlimited on PS2, PSP

Test Drive Unlimited has become even less limited now: it is now headed for the PS2 and PSP. The game, which was previously destined for the PC and Xbox 360, will also be released for the aforementioned Sony consoles this Autumn.

Currently in development by Ataris Melbourne House studio, the versions of Test Drive Unlimited for PS2 and PSPTMretain most of the core gameplay features of the Xbox 360 and PC games, including seemingly endless miles of streaming Hawaiian roads, server-based online play, over 70 luxury supercars rendered in painstaking detail, solo challenges, player-created races, car upgrades and downloadable content. The version for PSP is one of the first ever genuinely online games for the console, making impressive use of Wireless and stepping way beyond simple LAN gaming. In addition, enhancements have been made to the single player game with an Arcade Race mode for snack-sized play.

The action in Test Drive Unlimited takes place on the open roads spanning the Hawaiian island of Oahu. In solo mode, players complete challenges and pit their wits against realistic AI opponents to gain points, unlockfurther tests of their skill and open up more of Oahus diverse tropical road system. With the massive online component, which allows racers across the globe to challenge others in the virtual paradise of the games persistent online racing world, Test Drive Unlimited offers one of the most comprehensive video game racing experiences to date.

The Xbox 360 and PC versions of Test Drive Unlimited will also be released in autumn in order to fine tune the gameplay and vehicle handling, and to ensure the enormous technical demands of implementing the games original concept and technology will be met in full.
