Capcom’s good luck continues, as the publisher and developer has announced that the Devil May Cry franchise has shipped ten million copies.

The series made its debut on the PS2 back in 2001 – the latest sequel hit PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. It should be pointed out that Devil May Cry 4 set a series record by shipping some 2.2 million copies worldwide.

Series creator Hideki Kamiya is no longer working at Capcom, though. He joined up with several other Capcom superstars at Platinum Games where he is working on a DMC-esque action title called Bayonetta.

There’s simply no surprise: despite the critical thrashing it got, Resident Evil 5 has shipped over 4 million copies worldwide. Capcom noted this to be its “biggest launch of any title in the series”. It should be noted that the series has shipped over 40 million copies since its premiere in 1996.

Resident Evil 5 also got a lot of pre-launch hype, including its playable demo which was downloaded over 4 million times on PS3 and Xbox 360.

The game was released last week in Europe and North America on PS3 and Xbox 360. A PC version is expected in the coming months.

Capcom Defends Charging for Resident Evil 5 Multiplayer DLC

It was surprising news earlier this week when Capcom wanted to charge additional for multiplayer offerings that usually come built-in in other games. So, it wasn’t much surprising that they were on the receiving end of a huge backlash from fans, which has caused the company to defend its decision for charging for multiplayer DLC in Resident Evil 5.

Seeing as how the DLC will be released within the next few weeks and will not add any content beyond the modes themselves, fans have argued that the pack should be free, as in the case of the free patch enabling online functionality to the existing Mercenaries mode.

"Although Versus mode makes use of the assets that exist in the game, the functionality is not currently in the game and is above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5," said Capcom. "We have never included a Versus mode in Resident Evil before, and as well as the costs of development of the feature, there’s also additional bandwidth costs associated with it."

More on it as the story develops.

“We are very excited to be bringing the sequel to Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles to the Wii as it’s the perfect fit for the platform,” said Mona Hamilton, vice president, marketing, Capcom Entertainment. “We are always looking for new ways to give Capcom fans a chance to experience our games. Umbrella Chronicles was a huge success for us, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles includes a more in-depth co-op experience, and we are excited to bring this exclusive content to the Wii audience.”

The story is based on Resident Evil 2 and includes its characters, Leon S Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Similar to its predecessor, the game will combine first-person shooting with interactive pathways and will explore the storyline that was not covered in Umbrella Chronicles. It will have two-player cooperative modes and a new Evade system.

Resident Evil 5 Versus Announced

Moving away from the cooperative nature of the game, Capcom today announced ‘Versus’, a new multiplayer mode for Resident Evil 5 that will pit player against player – aka deathmatch. Most surprisingly, it will be premium content, as in you actually have to pay to have deathmatch mode added to your game.

Versus will allow up to four players in online battles in two different game types. First up is Slayer’s Rule, a point-based game that challenges players to kill Majinis. The second is Survivor’s Rule where players hunt each other.

It will be available on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network a few weeks after the game is released. It will cost 400 Microsoft points ($4.99).

Screen_2Capcom has officially woken the dead again as the publisher today confirmed that Dead  Rising 2 is indeed in development, and for three platforms too: PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Adding another zero to its predecessor, the sequel promises “tens of thousands of zombies” and will take players to the “gambling paradise of Fortune City”.

The game is set several years after the events of the first title. Unfortunately, the virus was not contained and spread unchecked throughout the US.

It is being developed by Canadian developer Blue Castle Games with a number of members from the original Dead Rising team. Capcom’s global head of research and development – Keiji Inafune – will serve as the game’s producer and will play an active role in the project.

Below are the first screenshots from the game. Enjoy.

Capcom Wins Dead Rising Lawsuit

Capcom’s Dead Rising may have been a critical and commercial hit, but someone didn’t like the game: film production company MKR Group who alleged that the game stole ideas from their Dawn of the Dead film. While they had taken things to court, the trades are now reporting that Capcom got the upper hand and has won the lawsuit over the film company.

United States Magistrate Judge Richard Seeborg granted Capcom’s motion seeking relief from a lawsuit after MKR threatened to sue.

"The few similarities MKR has alleged are driven by the wholly unprotectable concept of humans battling zombies in a mall during a zombie outbreak," claimed Capcom in the motion.

Though Capcom is basking in glory right now, their win wasn’t exactly a pretty one. Dozens of zombie movies and games were introduced in court by Capcom to establish the conventions of the zombie genre, but they were all thrown out because the company included summaries taken from Wikipedia.

Ultimately, Seeborg found some critical differences between the game and the movie, most notably the absence of a political or social message in the game which the movie proudly flaunts.

Capcom is currently developing further titles in the series, with sequels said to be in the works for multiple platforms.

Seeing as how the arcade business is almost dead in North America, it comes as no surprise that Capcom does not plan on releasing Street Fighter IV on arcades stateside.

"At this point, it does not look like Street Fighter IV arcade machines will officially hit the U.S. arcade market," stated Chris Kramer, Capcom’s senior director of communications and community.

He also shot down the idea that the game could revitalize the arcade scene, noting that no game by itself can rejuvenate an industry which has been dead for “seven or eight years.”

Street Fighter IV is due out February 2009 on PS3 and Xbox 360, with a PC version set for release later.
