Atari Founder Calls Video Games “Trash”

In a recent interview with Electric Design, Atari co-founder and gaming pioneer Nolan Bushnell commented that games nowadays are “pure, unadulterated trash” and that he is “sad” for the current situation.

“We used to have families sit down and play a game together,” he added. “A lot of video games today are very isolated. You don’t see mom and dad, sister and brother, sitting down like they used to play, say, Monopoly. That represented good mentoring time for families that just isn’t happening now.”

Bushnell has most recently worked on uWink, a series of interactive restaurants that feature touch-screen terminals with which customers can order food and drinks, as well as play games, watch movie trailers, videos and more.

Unrated Manhunt 2 Leaked by SCEE Employee

It has been quite a while since an unrated copy of Manhunt 2 had been made available on P2P and Warez networks worldwide. No one knew where the version originated from, until now. The originator of the leak was, apparently, an employee of SCEE. Here’s what Take-Two had to say:

[We] have confirmed that a former employee of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has acknowledged his responsibility for the unauthorized online distribution of an unrated play-test version of Manhunt 2 submitted for the European PAL PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system.

Unfortunately, details of the case are yet unknown. Those interested in playing the unrated version can download it, but will need a modified PS2 to run the disc.

A rated version of Manhunt 2 will be released on October 31 on PS2, PSP and Wii in North America; the game is still banned in Britain.

Harvey Birdman Delayed

Capcom announced that Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, the forthcoming game based on the adult swim show, has been pushed back from its November 13 release into sometime next year. This was confirmed by the company’s senior strategy director Christian Svensson in a forum post.

“The game is and has been finished, submitted and approved, however we felt releasing the game on the same day 112 other SKUs released was not ideal for its chances. Retail buyers agreed,” he wrote in the post. “As such, we’ve opted to move the title out into a slightly cleaner release window. This will allow us to get on more shelves, do a bit more outreach to the media and hopefully get the fans in on the action a bit more.”

The game will be out on the PS2, PSP and Wii. The PlayStation versions will cost $29.99, with the Wii going for $39.99. All versions are identical, bar customized controls for the Wii’s motion-sensitive controllers.

Warhawk 1.2 Update to Add Rumble, New Map Layouts

Warhawk director Dylan Jobe has posted about the upcoming v1.2 patch for the game on the official PlayStation Blog. Slated for release in December, the patch will offer updated gameplay featuring including new map layouts.

“We have found that while a lot of players like playing the really large games, there was a pretty big segment that was playing smaller games,” he wrote. The five new layouts for existing maps will be tailored for matches between four and eight players. They are Eucadia: High City, Island Outpost: Standoff, The Badlands: South City, Destroyed Capitol: Garden Showdown, and Archipelago: Close Corridors.

DualShock 3 rumble support will also be added through the patch. It will also let players purchase game-related content using the game’s internal interface instead of going back to the PS3 XMB PlayStation Store.

A v1.1 update will be made later this month that will offer fixes to gameplay, as well as implement Arbiters.

Primotech has a story up where they carry word from a “source close to BioWare” that the studio’s next game will be a MMORPG based on the Star Wars: KOTOR universe. The game was originally released back in 2003 and has become a seminal hit.

Their source states that the game is being developed by the company’s Austin studio, which was formed in 2006 and is headed by James Ohlen, whose past credits include the first KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights and the Baldur’s Gate series, all legendary RPGs.

As expected, no other details are currently known about the game.

However, he noted that there aren’t any “firm” plans as of yet and that when they do have anything to say, they will make an announcement. EA currently has offices in the country, which is experiencing a booming economy, and a mobile studio focused on testing.

Xbox 360 Price Cut in Japan

Although Microsoft is doing quite well in North America and Europe, sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan have been nothing but abysmal. To show how desperate they are, the company announced a price cut of the console in the country by about 13 percent. The Xbox 360 will be sold for 34,800 yen (US $304) starting November 1, down from 39,975 yen (US $348). That’s the price for the premium model, with the Core model going for 27,800 yen ($240).

This comes after Sony cut prices on the PS3 by $100, marketing two $399 and $499 models in all regions. The Wii currently sells for around 25,000 yen ($219) in Japan.
