Joust Movie Coming

How do you make a game out of a knight mounted on a flying ostrich defeating similarly equipped foes? Well, you gotta ask CP Productions then. The studio plans on making a film adaptation of classic arcade title Joust. Set to be completed by next June, the film is being billed as “Gladiator meets Mad Max.”

The script has been penned by Marc Gottlieb and is set 25 years on in the floating city of Las Vegas. It is unclear as to how it will relate to the game itself and how many major characters will appear. According to GameDaily BIZ, the studio plans on maintaining the integrity of its films, which it plans to independently finance. “We won’t have eight writers and six executives trying to put their thumbprint on the film… the vision of the filmmakers will be kept pure,” said studio founder Michael Cerenzie.

It is yet unclear if the game’s author John Newcomer is involved.

With the convention over, the organizers of GC 2007 sent out an announcement stating that they have attracted a total of 185,000 visitors to Leipzig this year, a slight increase over the past year. This figure includes 12,300 registered trade visitors, compared against 8700 of the past year. Exhibitors were happy too, with 85 percent saying that their participation in the event had had a great significance in the scope of their overall marketing activities, while 91 percent said that they plan on joining again next year.

“The GC 2007 has exceeded all of our targets. A high degree of satisfaction can be seen, not only amongst exhibitors and trade visitors, but also amongst the general public. This result underscores once again why the GC, as Europe’s leading fair in the industry, has an ideal home in Leipzig”, said Josef Rahmen, Managing Director of the Leipziger Messe.

Lucky Luke Goes West

Atari has announced Lucky Luke: Go West! For PC, Wii and Nintendo DS. An upcoming animated movie tie-in of the same name, the game features the film’s titular character set loose in the Wild West. The film itself is set for release this December in France and other European territories, following the game’s release in Autumn.

Inspired by the cucumber-cool cowboy’s adventures in the comic book ‘The Caravan’, Lucky Luke: Go West! lets players jump into his spurred boots for a thrill-a-minute journey escorting the notorious Dalton brothers to New York to stand trial. Of course, the Daltons do what they do best – they escape, rob banks, wreak havoc and blow stuff up. Throw in the tenacious Lucky Luke, his faithful steed Jolly Jumper, tribes of deadly Indians, cops by the cart-load, and a vast wagon train where the Daltons mislay their ill-gotten gains and the result is a wild world of hilarious new western adventures.

Play as a selection of different characters from the famous stories, including the Daltons and of course Luke himself, through the fun and colourful environments from the parched western desert to the mean streets of the Big Apple. A host of frenetic mini-games will test much more than the speed of the player’s draw with chaotic shooting, drawing, steering, dancing and music games. Take on the story mode solo or invite up to 3 friends to join in for party mode mayhem and see who really does have the fastest draw in the west.

Shooting faster than his shadow, Lucky Luke fights crime and injustice across the wild plains of the old west. Lucky Luke is one of the most popular and best-selling comic-book series in Europe with more than 250 million comic books sold in 20 countries. A total of 80 comic books, four feature length animated cartoons, two live action films, three cartoon series and five video games have been released to date, and the award-winning ‘The New Adventures of Lucky Luke’ animated TV series is currently broadcast in more than 20 countries worldwide from France to Indonesia.

The game is in development at Tate Interactive (PC, Wii) and Neko (DS). It is only currently scheduled for Europe; no plans for other territories were announced.

Hoping to revitalize its failed gaming platform, Nokia and Capcom have announced that the latter will be publishing games on N-Gage, Nokia’s next-generation mobile gaming platform, in 2008. The new platform will make its debut later this year.

Interestingly, Capcom is the first (and only) Japan-based publisher to show interest in the new N-Gage platform, which will be spread out across S60 mobile phones and devices. Capcom is one of the major players of the industry, holding heavyweight franchises such as Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Onimusha and Lost Planet, among many others. Speaking of the announcement, Yosuke Yoneda, Director of Capcom’s European Mobile Division, said “Capcom is dedicated to creating great mobile games, and believes that N-Gage will allow us to bring some of our most famous franchises to the platform. Our dedication to quality and creative thinking has seen the company produce a series of ground-breaking titles, with stunning visuals and in-depth game play, never before seen on the mobile”.

No actual games were announced, but one can only assume what games will be coming out from this publisher.
