The Prince is here! Gamers can now purchase and download Prince of Persia Classic on Xbox Live Arcade.
The classic game has gamers taking on the role of the prince as he embarks on a quest to rescue the princess before she has to wed the wicked Jaffar. The prince has to vault across platforms, avoid traps and duel enemies on his way to the princess. All this has to be done in under 60 minutes
Originally developed by Jordan Mechner, “Prince of Persia” broke molds and made waves when it launched for the PC in 1989. By using hours of live footage of his younger brother running and jumping and a technique called ‘rotoscoping’, Mechner achieved a natural sense of movement, which was widely perceived as a great leap forward in the quality of animation seen in computer games. Additionally, Mechner utilized intense sword fighting action vs. the widely popular use of projectile weapons in video games at the time. With clever puzzles and deadly traps, the original “Prince of Persia” influenced a rich sub-genre of games were sprawling non-scrolling levels and fluid animation became the norm.
The XBLA version features enhanced character designs, animations and visuals; new traps and puzzles; 12 achievements and three different leader boards.

Macs aren’t traditionally known for their gaming abilities due to lack of software. All that may be about to change: EA plans on bringing top-tier games to Mac OS X this summer powered by TransGaming’s Cider engine. The titles include Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Madden NFL 08, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08, Need for Speed: Carbon, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and Battlefield 2142.
“Traditionally Mac users had to wait to play the latest blockbuster games,” says TransGaming CEO Vikas Gupta. “We’re thrilled that TransGaming’s Cider engine will dramatically decrease the time it will take to bring EA’s hit portfolio of games to a thirsty Mac market.”
“Leveraging TransGaming’s Cider technology to bring our hit franchises to Mac users is an exciting first step in delivering the video game experience that Mac users deserve,” said Scott Cronce, EA vice president. “With the launch of these titles, it truly is the best time to be a Mac gamer.”
Developed by TransGaming, the Cider technology eliminates the need to rewrite games for the Mac. It acts as an interpreter between the game’s original code and the Intel Mac, letting users of the hardware get their game on.

Sony Online Entertainment has announced The Agency, a fast-paced online action shooter MMO, for PC and PS3.
The Agency is a pick-up-and-play experience where players assume the role of elite agents in a modern-day world. Both solo players and groups will enjoy a wide variety of cooperative and competitive story-driven missions set in exotic locales across the globe.“The inspiration for The Agency came from the spy and espionage genre. We want to put players in the heart of the action to experience what it’s really like to live the life of an elite agent,” said Hal Milton, Lead Designer, Sony Online Entertainment. “Players will jet set around this virtual world to exotic locales, infiltrate enemy organizations to steal secrets and perpetrate sabotage, all the while building their own agency with an eye towards global domination.”
Persistent character development allows players to supplement their gear with exotic and powerful skills that make them feel like the elite agents they’ve always dreamt of becoming. Additionally, in lieu of the typical class systems in many other games, The Agency’s approach is simply, “You Are What You Wear.” Players will customize their character’s attire based on the mission at hand, emphasizing combat, support, stealth, or even cover identities.
Players begin their experience by choosing to be a slick UNITE spy or a gritty ParaGON mercenary. Both factions will have players tangling in illicit activities such as drug smuggling, assassinations, espionage and counter intelligence. As they gain ranks within their chosen agency, players will increase their influence over the world while experiencing a deep story of action and intrigue. Along the way players will be able to build their own agencies, team with others to create joint agencies, and recruit a roster of useful Operatives.
Operatives are “living loot” characters that wait in the wings for orders to build that new sports car, gather intel for the next mission, or provide that satellite scan to expose the enemy. As players advance through the game, they will collect more powerful Operatives that will better assist them with missions. Players can use their roster to help themselves or their team and even trade Operatives with other players.
“SOE is looking to take the online gaming industry to new places with The Agency, not only in terms of its theme, but also in its design. It’s accessible to all types of players, blending genres and changing up established conventions. It’s different from anything SOE has released before,” said Matt Wilson, Director of Development, SOE Seattle. “Our goal is to break from traditional online games and provide players with a ‘fun now, no waiting’ gameplay experience in a dynamic, ever-evolving online world.”

Tale of Tales has offered us the first glimpse into The Path, their upcoming re-interpretation of the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale.
In The Path, you play Little Red Ridinghood. Not the cute blond toddler that we’re used to, but a young woman in the throws of teenage angst. When her mother sends her on an errand, she has no intention to stay on the path. But the forest is a dangerous place. Especially for lonely girl with an interest in wolves.“The Path is a single player game but it is being produced in a similar way. We have decided on the main structure of the project, but within that, no game has been designed yet. We have made a prototype with the whole environment and some characters in it. Based on this, we can make decisions about gameplay. A technology that we had developed earlier, called Drama Princess, allows us to populate a virtual world with believable autonomous characters quite easily. But now it turns out that they are having too much fun. At the expense of the gruesome tale that we are trying to tell.”
“Our story is about fear and uncertainty, getting lost in the forest and the inevitability of death. The music composed by Jarboe for the game already expresses this quite well. Now we are modelling the gameplay to get closer to that.”
The screenshots below are from an internal prototype of the game, and are not representative of the final game.
