EA-NFL Exclusivity May be Voided

GamersReports talks of a new law that might make the EA-NFL exclusivity deal void. Here’s a bit:

Now, pay attention, because this is a bit complicated. The current problems in the NFL between the league and the players association might make the EA/NFL contract void. This is because if the union decertifies, then anti-trust rules will apply. If this happens, then EA is out of luck. Antitrust laws would be in effect and the contract would be voided. (EA signed a deal with both the NFLPA and NFL so at the least, other companies could use the players, but not the actual team names. Not a big deal really, since we know who they would be referring to.)

However, this won’t be happening until 2008. So, you’ll have to put up with two more years of EA if you are into football games.

National Geographic Games

The nonprofit National Geographic Society is seeing the birth of a spinoff called National Geographic Ventures that will create PC, console and handheld games based on the company’s nature-themed television shows and its magazine.

Their first title is Herod’s Last Tomb, a hidden objects game that is already available on Windows and iPhone. “Entertainment with substance” is their motto, apparently, and their focus is not teaching materials. Upcoming titles include Rain Forests, Greencity and Africa.

World at War on Steam

Expanding your purchase options, Call of Duty: World at War is now available on Steam.

Developed by Treyarch, the game is now selling like hotcakes across all regions. It can be bought for $49.95, the same price as retail.

Chronicles of Spellborn Closed Beta Closed, NDA Lifted

Spellborn sends word that the closed beta signup process for The Chronicles of Spellborn has ended. Players will be informed starting tomorrow the starting date of the open beta.

Additionally, the developer noted that the NDA for closed beta testers and press parties is dropped as of today. Expect to see previews and impressions pop up across the Internet.

Demiurge Hires Underworld Designer, Has New IP in the Works

Demiurge Studios announced that they have hired designer Harley Baldwin White-Wiedow, a veteran of the games industry. He recently served as lead designer on the just-released Tomb Raider: Underworld.

The developer is now aiming towards developing their own intellectual property; so far, they’ve worked on ports mostly, including Mass Effect for PC. They are currently working on an unannounced project, with White-Wiedow leading the way.
